This article provides detailed information about the facilities at leach local Y branch.

Greater Beverly YMCA

35 Acre campus, 100,000 square feet total across 3 buildings:

  • Main Y (Sterling Center)

  • Douglas Stephens Early Learning and Sports Center

  • Robertson Achievement Center (Infant/Toddler and STEM classrooms)

  • Sterling Woods camp area and outdoor pool - trails


Studios: 4 studio spaces

  • A - large group ex studio (main floor)

  • B - spin studio in the back of the building

  • C - Mind/Body studio

  • D - Functional Training studio (group ex, crossfit style, small group or personal training)


Bay State Physical Therapy is housed on-site, their phone number is (978) 338-5688


Indoor Pool:

  • Large pool with 2 configuration options that change seasonally

    • Long course is 50 meters (April-Labor Day Weekend)

    • Short course is 2 25 meter pools (Sept-March)

  • Restroom/showers on deck

  • Parent observation areas

  • 2 chairlifts and stair entry

  • Shallow end starts at 3 ½ ft, deepest is 10 ½ ft

  • Temperature averages 82-84F


Outdoor Pool (Memorial Day-Labor Day):

  • 25 person capacity

  • Mostly utilized for camp but available to members on the weekends

  • Shallow wading area up to 8 ft

Gymnastics Center:

  • 12,000 square foot (1 of 3 primary competitive locations)


Parking info: 

  • 3 lots (main, middle, and upper level), spots for handicapped and veterans

  • During larger swim or gymnastics meets, participants and spectators are asked to park at satellite locations


Most Notable Features: 

Olympic length pool, Extended Turf area for cross training (2 zones), large full-service cafe, 3 full size courts in 2 gym locations, on site traditional day camp, expanded community locker room, simple floor plan, multiple elevators, large saunas on the pool deck


Quirks: 

Leveled parking and multiple buildings (see above), multiple locations in the city (Cabot Street Y, McPherson Youth Center, and Sterling Center)


Glen T MacLeod Cape Ann YMCA


The Glen T. Macleod facility is just over  64,000 square feet and environmentally friendly. It is built on a 10-acre property with ample parking and situated by Halyard Condos and the Gloucester Crossing Shopping Plaza. 


Studios:

  • Pilates Reformer Studio 

  • Mind Body Studio

  • Spin Studio

  • Large Group Exercise Studio


Indoor Pool:

  • 8 lanes, 25 yards

  • 84° (warmer than Beverly)

  • Ultraviolet filter, limited chlorine 

  • Extended shallow end for larger class space

  • Wide shallow stairs for accessibility 

  • Lots of aqua fitness equipment (bikes, treadmills, trampolines, etc)


Outdoor Splash Pad (Memorial Day-Labor Day):

  • Zero standing water

  • Turf area with picnic tables and Adirondack chairs

  • Available for Family Memberships only

  • Splash pad birthday parties available

Gymnastics Room:

  • Small area used for Open Gymnastics, Parent/Child and Preschool programs

  • Please refer to the other/older child gymnastics interest at the Beverly Y

Haverhill YMCA


Size of Building:65,000 square feet 

Size of Fitness Floor:6,090 square feet

Studio: 1,200 square feet

  • 1 Group Exercise Studio

  • All our classes are held in this studio, including cycle classes.  


Indoor Pool

  • 1 indoor pool

  • 4 lanes, 20 yards

  • We offer swim lesson (P/C, PSA, YSA, Teen/Adults), lap swim and open swim 

  • We do not offer swim team or water wise at this time.  


Parking info: 

  • 3 parking lots: one is directly behind the YMCA and is covered. A second is an upper parking lot behind the YMCA (Verizon Lot). The third is directly across the street from our upper parking lot.  


Most Notable Features

  • We have a Freight Farm! We are the first YMCA in the country to own and operate a freight farm!  Freight Farm Pamphlet Our farm is located at Gateway Academy- 415 Primrose Street. 


Quirks: 

  • The building is deceiving from the outside. It is much larger than it appears. 

  • There is an option for a local only membership for Haverhill/Plaistow



Ipswich Family YMCA


Facilities On Campus

    • Note: Explorers Camp and Sports Camp run in the woods on campus

    • The Y is contracted to run this center for New England Biolabs employees; occasionally when there are spots, we are able to enroll kids on our waitlist

  • Studio A - variety of formats, open to members when not scheduled for classes

  • Studio B - yoga and spin only, not available for open use


Indoor Pool:

  • 6 Lanes, 25 yards

  • 4-12 Feet

  • Springboard diving

  • Mini slide

  • Maintained at 82 degrees

  • Filtration: sand filters + chlorine 


Outdoor Aquatics Center (Memorial Day-Labor Day):

  • YMCA of the North Shore Members only (not including HAV/PCY local only members)

  • Large splash pad/water park features, 0 standing water

  • Large pool, ramp and shallow step entry

  • 3-6 Feet

  • Large twisty slide (drops into 4 feet - kids without “swim check” can use)

  • Ropes course (drops into 6 feet)

  • Large shade structures

  • Grassy lawn with picnic tables/umbrellas

  • Indoor bathrooms and seating area 


Parking info: 

  • Decently sized parking lot in front of the Y - does fill at certain high volume times

  • Overflow parking along the access road to the left of the lot (as you face the Y)

  • Neighboring TrueNorth Brewery allows additional parking before 12:00 PM


Most Notable Features: 

  • Outdoor water park

  • Outdoor basketball court (behind the Y)

  • Robust community partnerships

  • The whole facility is on one floor (very accessible)

  • Springboard diving

  • Attached VFW

  • Steam rooms


Quirks: 

  • Very small family locker room given the volume - staff occasionally opens the youth locker rooms for family usage during busy times


Lynch/van Otterloo YMCA


Size of Building: 90,000 SQ Feet 

Size of Fitness Floor: 40,000 SQ Feet


Studios:

  • Spin Studio

  • Group Exercise General (3)

  • Mind, Body Studio 

  • Personal Training Studio 

  • Powerfit Studio (cross fit style functional training with turf)

  • Gross Motor Studio - indoor play area (ELC and member use)

  • Squash Courts (1 doubles, 3 singles) 

    • CLUB LOCKER is the website to book courts, either members or staff can book

    • (Squash is different from racketball!)

    • Small, welcoming community

    • Join a round robin on the weekends to get connected


Indoor Pool:

  • 8-lane, 25 yards, lap pool (3.5-12 ft)

    • 81-83 degrees 

    • Diving board hours listed in schedules page

  • Small pool with large twisty water slide (3.6 -4 ft)

    • Pool temp is between 86-89 degrees (warmer, but not technically considered “therapeutic”)

    • Accessible walkway into pool 

    • Slide open only during scheduled hours (because it’s staffed), see schedule page “Open Swim with Slide”


Outdoor Pool (Memorial Day-Labor Day):

  • Zero entry great for younger kids and families-- spray features in shallow area

  • 5 foot depth in the deepest section 

  • Early AM lap swim

  • This pool often hits max capacity, based on lifeguard ratios (1:25)… therefore it’s only available for YNS members on a first come, first served basis

    • Recommend coming with a back up plan to swim indoors if the outdoor pool is at capacity.

    • Clarifying that ALL parties visiting must be on an active membership

Gymnastics Center:

  • One of our 3 large centers across the region

  • Above ground Tumble Track with foam pit access

  • 3 high beams, 1 crank beam, preschool floor beams

  • 1 Vault table, 1 vault trainer

  • 2 sets of uneven bars, 3 sets of junior practice bars

  • Various training equipment 

  • Spring floor


Gymnasium:   

  • Full size court with divider

  • Primary uses: basketball, pickleball, fee based sports programming


Parking info: 

  • 3 Parking lots (Front, Back and lower lots) 

    •  Members find parking as a pain point given our busy operations

  • Spots for Handicapped/Spaulding rehabilitation in front lot


Most Notable Features:

  • Children's Island summer camp

Plaistow Community YMCA


Gymnastics Center:

  • Largest Center in Northshore Association (Approx. 13,600 square feet)

  • Private Lesson Gymnastics for Inclusive Participants


Parking info: 

  • Front Parking Lot (Main Entrance) & Back Parking Lot (Early Learning Center Entrance)


Most Notable Features: 

  • Dedicated Pickleball Courts (3) 

  • Gymnasium

  • Large Back Field with Sand Volleyball Courts (3) & Gaga Pit

  • Largest Gymnastics Center

  • Conference Space is available for rent for community meetings and training.


Salem YMCA


Size of Fitness Floor:

  • Small-ish, compact, bright, with full suite of updated cardio and selectorized equipment


Studios:

  • 3 studio spaces

    • Group Ex studio off the Fitness Floor

    • Mind Body studios A & B in the Mind Body Wing


Indoor Pool:

  • 25 yards, 81 degrees, 6 lanes

  • 3.5-12 feet

  • Swim team, lap swim, aqua ex 


Parking info: 

  • City of Salem Meter Parking Monday -Saturday 8am-6pm Sunday 12pm-6pm $1.00 hour in Sewall lot.  Salem Residents pay $.50 an hour in Jerry’s lot  4 hour maximum

  • Meter maids are really vigilant - encourage people to pay close attention to their meter

  • Clarify that the Y doesn’t own or manage any of these lots.

  • Encourage members to download the parking app, Passport.


Most Notable Features: 

  • Ames Hall theatre

  • Adult locker rooms have steam rooms and saunas

  • Boutique Mind Body Studio space with a significant menu of classes included with membership 


Accessibility

  • With an older elevator (upgrades planned), here is what is accessible on the main floor, including:
