SWIM CHECKS

Children 16 and under must complete a swim check each time they come to swim at the Y. This is because kids’ energy and focus are often different from day to day based on a variety of factors, and we need to know they’re safe to swim TODAY.

How to take a swim check:

  1. Ask a lifeguard to do a swim check!

  2. Jump in, submerge fully, then return to the surface.

  3. Tread water for 30 seconds.

  4. Swim 25 yards unassisted on your front in a horizontal position without stopping or touching the bottom or side of the pool.

  5. Climb out unassisted.

If you don’t pass the check, no problem.  For today, swim with an adult caregiver in shallow water or wear a life jacket for Y programs.  Keep practicing and try again next time.

LAP & OPEN SWIM GUIDELINES

Group Ex Pro listings on our schedules page include the following descriptions to help members understand the guidelines for various ages and activities:

Open Swim

During open swim, the pool is available for all members to enjoy free swim, family play, adult fitness, water walking, etc. Green cones located on starting blocks designate space reserved for Open Swim. Children under the age of 10 require adult supervision. Adults must enter the water and stay within an arms reach of any child unable to pass the swim test. Lifeguards are available to administer the swim test which consists of treading water 30 seconds, swimming 25 yards unassisted and climbing out of the pool. USCG approved flotation devices and pool toys are available for member use.

Lap Swim (# lanes)

Lap lanes are available for members of all ages who are able to swim from one end of the pool to the other continuously. Yellow cones located on starting blocks designate lanes reserved for laps. During busy times, priority is given to adults. If there are two individuals sharing a lane, swimmers split the lane. For 3 or more swimmers, please circle swim. See Lifeguard for assistance with lane sharing or questions.
